Main
idea of this step:
Your research team will go back with the rest of the class to compare conservation plans and generate a big list of key conservation steps.
Start this process by nominating a facilitator. The facilitator's
job will be to stand near the blackboard or a flip-chart
and list all the actions that the various teams described
as the presentations are going on.
Take some time to exchange the elements of each group's
jaguar-conservation plan.
Sort Out the Suggestions
Main
idea of this step:
The teams will organize all the ideas from Step #3 into 6 or so big categories.
As a class, look over the entire list of ideas. Everyone
should help the facilitator organize the ideas and actions
under half a dozen big ideas or themes on flipchart papers
or on the board.
(For example, one team may suggest "Promote public
awareness in jaguar range countries about the protected
status of jaguars and their conservation needs."
Another team might suggest "Implement education programs
in schools and create festivals to celebrate the jaguar."
These could both be placed under the heading "Promote
education and public awareness." The broad headings
as well as the specific actions are important!)
What were the big ideas -- or broad themes -- that your class
came up with? Write them down. Keep this list under 10.
What were some of your
groups justifications for keeping or eliminating
ideas? What are some of the reasons why real conservation
biologists might have to eliminate some ideas?
