Monitor Disputes

Throughout history, people have struggled for control of fresh water. Today as the human population grows that struggle is intensifying around the world.

How much of the world's water is fresh?

One major conflict over fresh water involves the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in the Middle East, where Turkey, Syria and Iraq all have competing interests in the same waters. Syria and Iraq came to the brink of war in 1975 over water. Now, as population continues to grow in the region, all three countries are looking to the same waters to supply drinking water, irrigate farmlands and operate hydroelectric power plants.

What is the current status of the Tigris-Euphrates conflict? Research it on the Web and turn in two or three paragraphs to your teacher.
