In this module, you will follow the steps of real scientists and use
a new, cutting-edge model known as the Landscape Species
approach to explore a unique landscape.
Your mission is to create a presentation describing how you would
study and protect an Adirondack species in a project that benefits
wildlife, people and the greater Adirondack landscape. You and your
peers will review one another's presentations and decide some priorities
for conservation work in the Adirondacks.
Amy Vedder is the Director of the Living
Landscapes Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society. Through
this new approach to conservation, she seeks to understand the environment
by looking through the eyes of wildlife. This means taking stock of
the needs of the wildlife within an area (including humans) when confronted
with management decisions. Take a moment to listen to her introduce
the Living Landscapes Approach to conservation by clicking on the
link to the right.
First you'll need to do some reconnaissance to learn about a place
called the Adirondacks and the animals and people that call it home.
